羽田の国際線ターミナルにはとても大きな雛飾りがありました。もうすぐ春ですね。

The history of "Hina Matsuri" is long and the origin is in the middle of the "Heian" period (approx 1,000 years ago). At that time people conducted an event of purification to wish for the sound health of children called "Jyoumi no Sekku" on the first serpent day of March.
"Onmyoji", a fortune teller for astronomy, topography and human beings, was invited to pray to the gods of heaven and earth, offer food and throw "Hitogata" entrusting disaster and bad luck to rivers and the ocean.

Also at that time the ladies and children in the Court played "Hina-Asobi". This is the playing with dolls made of paper and toys imitating the tools used daily just like playing at housekeeping today. This type of play was described in Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) by Murasaki Shikibu and Makura no Soshi by Sei Shonagon. Based on these events and type of play, the present "Hina Matsuri" was established.

"Jyoumi no Sekku" has been held on March 3rd since the "Muromachi" period (approx 600 years ago). However, the "sekku" that was held on March 3rd from this time up to the "Azuchi-Momoyama" period (1568-1600) was far different from the girls' festival of playing with "Hina Ningyo". The point when the "Sekku" on March 3rd became a girls' festival was during the "Edo" period (1600-1868) when there was peace following the long period of the warring states.

At the beginning of the "Edo" period, in 1629 a splendid "Hina Matsuri" was held in the Imperial Palace in Kyoto. After this the shogunate also held "Hina Matsuri" in the shogun's harem known as "Oh-Oku". Then "Hina Matsuri" had spread from the samurai level to the townspeople and from the "Edo" area to local areas.

During the middle of the "Edo" period, "Hina Matsuri" displaying "Hina Ningyo" on the "Hatsu-Zekku" to celebrate the birth of a baby girl began to develop every year. In the town of "Edo", a doll market called "Hinaichi" was held in several places including "Jikkendana" (currently Nihonbashi Muromachi) and "Kayacho" (currently Asakusabashi).
At this time there were many kinds of "Hina Ningyo" and tools displayed together with them, and some gorgeous and excellent ones were created. Therefore because of a shogunate policy to admonish extravagance, official notice frequently prohibited the tendency of magnificent "Hina Ningyo".
During the "Meiji" period (1868-1912), the new government abolished "Sekku" events and set new holidays. However, events rooted in people's lives for such a long time cannot be discarded so easily and three "Sekku" related to children, "Jyoumi", "Tango" and "Tanabata" (star festival) remained as seasonal festivals and are actively celebrated still today.
